Artificial jewellery for wedding pics

Apart from rangoli and few other craft types I try to create, I also try some artificial jewellery designs on my own.  All craft ideas I do are amateur attempts

However I would like to share most of them that are relevant to the idea of Rangoli-sans-dots - rangoli, kolam and some art and craft ideas to do it yourself.

We can also use artificial or imitation jewellery a. ( made for this purpose -  if it made by us - it gives us a lot of satisfaction)

Some of the jewellery made by me and used in various decorations are in the images below.  Trinkets in various designs are available ready-made  They have to be assembled  into a necklace.

Our imagination is the key to get the final design.  Also, it is  time-consuming and needs lots of patience.

Artificial jewellery - necklaces, ear rings are quite easy to make.  What we need is time and patience.
All the parts of the jewellery are available separately.

We have to purchase them and create them.

How to make imitation jewellery at home

Artificial-jewellery-designs-for-wedding-1710a.jpg

For the necklace design in the image above - Take a metallic wire preferably gold or silver in colour (polyester or similar threads can also be used )

The yellow colour metallic beads at the top  are inserted in the metallic wire. Yellow is preferred for jewellery because it matches with the designs we have chosen for the other parts of the necklace.

It is available in different colours and we can chose it according to colour of the remaining part of the jewel.
Artificial-jewellery-designs-for-wedding-1710ab.jpg

We can have two or three beads  according to the gaps we require.  After the space created using the metallic beads one blue stone embedded in metal setting  is inserted in the metal wire.

At the bottom of this trinket is a ring for holding a pendant.  The pendants come in different types.  I have chosen one with a set of pearls.

The pearls have to be inserted one by one in the pendant through rings.  We can have one more set as shown in the image.  We can also add a locket or something similar at the bottom of the necklace.

I have tried with two rows of similar set of trinkets and pendants with the necessary accessories.

We can reduce the number of trinkets in each row , gradually reducing the arc of the necklace to get a beautiful design.

We can also have different colour combination in each row or in different rows.  The possibilities are infinite.

Artificial jewellery kaise banate hain - simple ideas
Artificial-jewellery-designs-for-wedding-1710ad.jpg
This is second necklace idea - an artificial or costume jewellery, of course.

It is simpler than the previous one.  The procedure is the same using a metallic or polyester wire create the design with green stones.  Ear-rings are the among the simplest we can do in artificial jewelry.

The stone setting in blue and white is readily available in the market (in India) with rings at the bottom. We have to insert the pearl pendants one by rings that can be closed with pliers.

Again there are different varieties of stones, pendants and the combinations that can be got are many.

If you are looking for costume jewellery ideas , imitation jewellery ideas for saree to be made at home you can try one of these.  An awesome craft idea but it is time consuming.

Bhogi kundala muggulu with dots

Many big muggulu with bright colours adorn many homes during this harvest festival season . It is more joyous because it is celebrated during spring.

The climate is nice and cool in many parts of India.  There is a tradition of wearing new clothes and going to the temple as we do for Diwali

Drawing muggulu is also for  conveying messages through simple art drawn on the floor be it with tiles, cement or mud.

This kolam has all that are connected with Bhogi and Sanrkanti festival , namely Pot , Pongal , sugarcane , Sun  and  colours

Thee were requests from viewers on YouTube for a small pot muggu .  So I created this 7 by 7 design.  A compact one suitable for small spaces too.

Nowadays space is a premium for rangoli designs , particularly in metropolitan cities.  Necessity is the mother of invention.  Viewers requests kindled my imagination and I created two rangolis one of which is shared here .

This colourful collection of  rangoli designs for door step can also be drawn for decorating a bigger rangoli .

I have shared the designs with colour , you may use it as a white rangoli because usually we draw without colours for door ways.

Drawing rangoli and offering Pooja to door step with flowers, haldi kumkum is quite common in southern part of India.

flower patterns, usually lotus ,  leaves,  tendrils , spirals and a few other standard motifs are used because the space available is less .

After drawing the kolam in white we can also decorate with kaavi ( ochre like colour )  daily or on Fridays at least.

I also use neli ( wriggling lines ) on either side of the straight lines , particularly for door ways .  This practice I inherited from my mother

"The old traditional way of making rangolis ... no wasting of rangoli, no fancy designs just simple and sweet "

"Very nice.  Nowadays, people hardly draw freehand rangoli.  It is unique and much more natural looking "

These are two comments from my Facebook Page Rangoli sans dots .

When I started sharing old type of muggu on social media I was hesitant because I was not sure whether they would be liked

After more than a decade on social media ,  I am glad that I started sharing what I know and passionate about.

Rangoli borders  may actually resemble jewellery in these parameters - beauty, intricacy.  Which of these two inspires the other

As usual these designs can be drawn for the doorway or door step .  Also we can use them to decorate a bigger rangoli

We draw big rangoli designs for New Year and Sankranti.  It is customary to decorate them with borders at the bottom

or at the sides .  We need lots of simple designs for this .  Our imagination to create designs and patterns has not limits

Still , these designs can be book marked to try them on various occasions and festivals . May be they can kindle our imagination

to create new designs .border-muggulu-designs-with-colours-2110a.jpg

Rangoli borders can be drawn at doorways too ( called vaasal padi kolam ).

The doorway is also decorated with a rangoli design in addition to the rangoli drawn at the entrance.

Since only a width of 100 millimetre or so is available, very simple yet cute beautiful designs can be drawn in the available space.

Doorways or doorsteps are given a lot of importance in our culture.  There is a custom of performing Pooja

to the door way and adorning with rangoli designs .  We also offer haldi kumkum and flowers particularly on Fridays.

So we need lots of designs .  Since these rangolis have less height we can use them as borders for bigger rangoli.

Beautiful rangoli designs with or without chukki are drawn for New Year and Pongal.  Usually they are decorated

with borders at the bottom and sides.  We may use these ideas on those occasions too.

Two images giving 5 border rangoli ideas

In the first image the second  design can be independently drawn as a rangoli particularly for festivals like Republic Day

or Independence day because of the use of colours orange, white and green while the first design is a simple pattern.

In the second image  three borders are shown. .  The first one is a simple design suitable for the circumference of a big rangoli.

The second one is a flower design with leaves on either side.  It can be drawn on the top or bottom of a rangoli or on all sides of rangoli.

The last one is a very simple design and is usually used as an extension along the periphery of free hand circular rangoli

This collection is in addition to many more ideas I have shared.  You can search in my blog for border kolam or border rangoli

or use the labels given at the bottom of the post to delve deeper into this variety of rangoli on this website.

Sometimes they are also  used as rangolis on  thresholds of doors,  exterior thresholds (main entrance door) , interior thresholds.

There is an artist hidden in all of us , creating and drawing kolam proves it . It is very easy to represent peacocks through rangoli

The step by step  images below will show how to draw a white peacock with seven to four odu pulli dot pattern

"Ethnic and homely "  " Beautiful rangoli and easy too.  keep up the great work .  All the best and good luck "

"Love the patience and time you invest in sharing these lovely pieces of art " .  These are some comments on Facebook

When I  get such positive feedback for my rangoli designs , it is natural that I am motivated to create more and more kolangal.

Varmahalskmi Habba / Navratri decoration -  harathi preparation Friday Puja procedure

I use a small silver plate as shown in the image for preparation of aarti plate as it is also called , for Friday Puja

and also for other festivals like Varamahalakshmi Pooja , every day during Navaratri , Sravan Sukravar Pooja

Add some kukkum in a small plate and mix it with water.  Apply sandalwood paste and kumkum on four sides of diyas

Place flower shaped cotton wicks or long wicks depending upon the type of lamps we use.  Add cow's ghee to the wicks,

light the lamps and perform aarthi  or harathi .  We can sing suitable songs in a language of our choice or mother tongue

First chukki rangoli is with 5 dots . In case we are trying first time for Diwali rangoli  and are looking for a simple design

a small version ( abridged version as my children say )

This kolam can be drawn independently or as the central design around which we can add free hand designs to get a bigger design

the dot grid is 5,3,1 . An easy white rangoli design for the ensuing festival season. The second rangoli  is with  7 by 4 chukki rangoli

The third design is 9 by 5 chukki rangoli .  Add colours to the white kolam to make it even more beautiful.

In my opinion white rangoli are beautiful in their own way. The fourth kolam is with dot pattern 15 dots - 3 rows then 13  , 11, 9 up to 3 dots.

The rose buds are important for this kolam the other patterns can be according to our choice

Kadalai paruppu sundal in cooker

For  ten ladies are invited for Navaratri kolu we need half kilogram kadalai paruppu or bengal gram.

Soak for 30 minutes or for 45 minutes if sufficient time is available.

Since other sundal varieties require 12 hours soaking this can qualify as a quick sundal recipe too.

The soaked kadalai paruppu  can be cooked separately in a vessel adding  water for cooking or in a pressure cooker.

( in a pressure cooker allow just two whistles ).

In a vessel take two  table spoons of cooking oil,  one teaspoon mustard seeds, a pinch of asafoetida, two medium size  red chillies and curry leaves.

Add the cooked bengal gram after removing excess water.  Add salt to taste.  Cook till moisture is removed and this will be for few minutes .  Adding grated coconut enhances the taste

Thirty to forty year ago sundal was distributed to guests in pottalam as we call it.  Now we  distribute it through ziploc  bags !

When we were young, we ( friends and I )  went to many  houses in the street .  Our excuse was  to see the Navaratri kolu but it was for the sundal pottalam.

When we came out of a house we would open the pottalam with excitement  to see what sundal variety was inside!

Sometimes same sundal was given in two to three consecutive houses .  So we invariably tried our luck in other houses.

The ladies in the houses , smiled because they knew what for we had come but with a smiling face gave sundal to all of us.

Naivedyam for Navarathri and Fridays - Paal poli

  • The dough can be prepared with rava or maida ,  I have used rava in this post
  • Chiroti rava is preferable .  If ordinary rava is used dry grind  in a mixer
  • Add a small pinch of salt , knead the dough, use a wet cloth to cover
  • Let the dough absorb the water for at least 2 hours
  • Using a rolling pin roll the dough into small circular pieces
  • Then using a fork pierce the flattened dough at a few places so that the holes are through
  • This will prevent air from getting trapped in the poori when frying ( use of Physics, in cooking ! )
  • Fry the pooris , pressing them while frying to remove any little  air that may be inside
  • The flattened poori is soaked in boiled milk
  • Milk  is kept ready by boiling with  sugar , cardamom powder and saffron
  • Let the  pooris soak for a few minutes, then  remove them. Garnish with pistachios , cashews and almonds for plating
  • A tempting recipe for Diwali sweet

Karthigai Deepam special kolam 15 pulli

I wanted to create a simple rangoli with deepam ( or lamp designs ).  After several small designs I wanted to try a bigger design.  Hence the dot pattern is 15 to 1

The first image , a white kolam step shows how the outer designs are created. I think this one image will suffice to get an idea.

This is also a simple kolam but again with influence of free hand rangolis in the motifs on either side of the lamps.

As seen in the second picture it is beautiful without filling the central space with colours. for this activity we  need 10 to 15 minutes

Filling up the gaps will take some time and demands  patience! Two pics showing before and after filling with rangoli colours.

Karthigai Deepam in Tamil Nadu is somewhat similar to Diwali celebrations particularly lighting diyas ( for those who are not aware )

 Simple rangoli motifs or patterns

A collection of easy motifs that can be used in rangoli or kolam .

The first image shows the patterns I regularly use in the free hand kolam I draw and share.  It is not a comprehensive collection.

Spirals, paisleys , floral petals of various shapes, leaves , tendrils , flower designs , birds , dots , small lines are some of the common patterns.

I have shown the close up of some the motifs used in the other images shared in this post.  In free hand rangoli we have patterns drawn

invariably on the periphery of the rangoli .  At the centre we can use the flower designs.  Congruity in selection comes with experience.

Floral petals can be with one , two or three lobes.  We can also have clover shaped patterns.  The options are infinite.

One pic shows how to draw bird motifs with single line and 2 line technique.  We can represent complicated ideas through simple patterns.

The feet of Lord Krishna or Goddess Lakshmi are drawn in rangoli kolam.  One of the easiest ways to depict the Feet of God is shown in one image.

Rangoli sans dots as the name suggests is all about rangoli without dots.  Some of the designs created by me few years back are shared here.   Free hand designs test our imagination.

While white kolam can be drawn for daily purpose rangoli , we can draw the colourful ones for festivals like New Year.

If you are looking for simple rangoli designs without colours for beginners that are new too these rangolis

may be the ones you are looking for.  Obviously most. kolam drawn by me are new particularly without chukki type

because they are all created by me . Some of them spontaneously others are recorded in many notebooks .  " Every time you come up with something new and different "

This is a sample feedback from one of my social media accounts.  The reason is I spend my afternoons practising , creating

Addition of colours have been shown in the images below.  The background has not been filled.  If time permits choose  a suitable background.

Medium size kolam  designs for New Year , Bhogi and Pongal festivals

Kolam designs above 15 dots may ( can ) be classified under an intermediate category, they are neither small nor are they very big.

They can be  drawn for festivals like Margazhi, Ugadi or at the entrance of kalyana mantap ( wedding hall ) .

One such design below.  It is with a 15 dot to 8 dot grid ( The dots are idukku pulli type - meaning that after a row of dots is placed the next one is placed between the previous row of dots and below ( or above ).

Consequently, the number of dots reduce by one in each row - 15, 14, 13, 12 till 8 dots in this case.

I have shared the plain and white kolam.  White kolam designs are beautiful in their own way and are widely used in Tamil Nadu, daily.

In the kolam with colours I have chosen to hide the ribs drawn on the floral patterns by adding the colours.  We can also add the ribs again after filling the colours.

There us  image represents an intermediate step of the kolam design after drawing the 7 floral patterns.  The design at the centre and the patterns connecting the dots between the inner designs and the outer flowers are drawn.

Kolam tip - The distance between the dots can be chosen according to our convenience depending on the space and time available.

The more the distance the larger will the kolam below and hence occupy more space and will take more time to complete and  add colours..

Big kolam with dots for competitions, festivals, functions

This rangoli or muggulu are suitable for New Year , Sankranti muggulu or Pongal kolam with dots when we draw big and beautiful designs

17 dots kolam designs - birds rangoli designs for competitions

Kolam designs with big  dot grid are commonly used during Margazhi  season.  One such common kolam  , my kolam is slightly modified when compared with the original version.

The theme is using a pair of birds on all four sides with the remaining dots being used up with some simple patterns like flowers, leaves.

I have retained the original birds but have modified the other patterns.  We can also have  nestlings too in this kolam.  The dot grid is 17 to 1.

17 dots kolam designs - birds rangoli designs for competitions step by step with a few images , it is simple with repetitive patterns

on all four sides and as usual the remaining dots

If you are looking for 17 dots rangoli kolam , 17 to 1 dots rangoli , 17 pulli kolam images or big chukki rangoli , this design may be the one you are searching.

The elephant kolam design is a popular kolam with dots found in public domain.  It is also a popular kolam in our family.

Just as we have "family song" in our movies, there are some rangolis with dots that have been  popular in our family for decades.

This is one of them.

Another using birds has been shown in an earlier kolam here in this blog .  More will follow in the future.

The dot pattern for this rangoli is 21 to 1 (ner pulli).

First draw all the elephants one by one.  Then the central floral design is drawn and the remaining dots are filled with floral designs.

Finally the colours are filled and remaining gaps are filled with some colour, brown in this case.  Free hand decorations of the elephant are done

to complete the kolam with 21 dots this can be classified as a big kolam with dots.

There are many more kolam that need a dot pattern using 20 and 25 dots.  Since drawing them by the traditional method is time consuming,

I will update this post as and when I add more rangoli designs of this type to my collection.

The elephant-rangoli designs is  a rangoli with 21 to 1 dots intermediate steps are shown below.

One image is  with only the elephants and canopied seat (called howdah or ambari ).

The gaps between two elephants is filled with a four petal floral design and the tusk as shown  That leaves only the dots at the centre.

I have filled it with a common floral petal design which with colours filled is available in simple floral patterns.

( Simple kolam designs can be used independently as a kolam or as a part of a bigger kolam ).

The first step shows only the four elephants drawn on four sides with the canopied seat and caparison ( a decorative cloth on the back )  .

In the second step I have added the tusk(s) and floral patterns between the elephants.

The first image shows  basic and simple freehand  kolam from common star rangoli

Tradition has it that the  star shaped design is drawn with two lines.  Petals are drawn along the edges of the star pattern.

The gaps between are filled with floral petals and the rangoli is filled  colours to get the design shown below.

A simple but attractive rangoli.  Can be drawn in double quick time.

The lotus, is widely used in  freehand rangolis.  No wonder I have also used them in Rangoli-sans-dots at the centre of a rangoli or on the periphery.

The lotus has been a religious symbol in India and one  can  find them  in religious places like temples.
The lotus in particular has been associated with  many Gods and  Puranic tales. Some freehand designs have been added between the petals.

Complete the rangoli with bright  colours. The motifs chosen should match the floral design at the centre.

This post is a " collection " of simple, cute and beautiful (!) rangoli designs.  We can choose nine from these and use one for each day of Navratri

to make the celebration more attractive and grander or for that matter have a simple colourful rangoli for Diwali.

However, traditionally, in parts of India, rangoli are drawn at the entrance daily and are filled with colours rangoli powder of various colours or left plain and white

Filling of rangoli with various colours is an art and needs some practice so that one colour does not spill on to another.

If one has the patience, the rangoli can be drawn and the colours filled.  Usually, for drawing a rangoli and filling it with colours

and completing the design one will need between 15 minutes and one hour depending upon the design, the method of colouring chosen.

The rangoli / muggu above has a central circular design.  Four simple geometric patterns evolve from the circle.  Above these flower designs with four petals each are drawn.  Also a petal or leaf design is drawn between any two flowers.  It is  is completed with a border surrounding all these.

On the inside of the border  blue and orange lines are drawn parallel to the white line. The circle at the centre has a 8 petal design at the centre. I have not filled the gaps and treated it as completed at the level shown in the image above.

Instead  of filling up the inside with colours as is usually done,  I have drawn parallel lines with different colours hence the time taken to complete is relatively  less. The motifs or patterns surrounding the centre were thought of as the muggu / rangoli  developed.

This is usually the case in any free hand design.  We have some idea and the design develops as we draw the rangoli.  Then it is filled with some colours on the periphery to save time and  and also to give a different appearance to the image.

Important Rangoli tip  Filling up rangoli with colours of our choice or suitable to the motifs or patterns used.

Filling rangoli with rangoli powder also comes with practice because care should be taken to ensure that the colour of

one pattern or design does not spill into the other.

However, if it happens, it can be corrected.  For example if we fill a rose with pink colour and we inadvertently

spill green meant for the leaves, on the pink petals, that can be corrected by adding pink again over the spilt green colour.

Drawing  neat and beautiful curved lines makes the rangoli very attractive though it is a very simple rangoli design.

Colourful curved lines parallel to the white design can be drawn to  get a colourful design. Or leave it plain and simple.

These rangolis can be used as apartment kolams as they are called in Tamil Nadu.

Apartment kolam are small rangoli designs drawn at the entrance of apartments due to constraints in space.

Some designs in here may be suitable for kids too !

First image The rangoli  starts with a plus and expands with semi-circular patterns and petal like designs

.  It has a simple two line border filed with blue rangoli powder on which red dots are added.  All the four edges have spiral patterns.

The rangoli is filled with different colours yellow, green and blue. The remaining space that is black can also be filled with some colour of our choice,

only thing it is to be done carefully.  The rangoli with colours filled is available in Dusshera rangoli

Second image - This kolam / rangoli  also uses floral petals as motifs.  The basic kolam is drawn with spiral patterns as shown.

The outermost patterns are based on floral petals and are used to decorate the kolam.

Third image - In the rangoli  the central design is drawn by drawing intersecting lines and forming the parallelogram like patterns.

The edge of each one is expanded with floral designs with two petals.  The gaps between the petals are filled with free hand designs.  The central design is further enhanced with circular patterns of various colours.

Finally the colours are filled up as shown to obtain the image shown above resulting in a colourful (green, yellow, blue ) floral pattern at the centre.  The rangoli  has two floral designs, the innermost one with petals of two colours and the outermost one filled with pink colour.

The rangoli has been filled completely with pink outside the central design.  This takes some time and demands patience also.

After filling the gaps with pink floral petal motifs in orange have been added.  On the outside the places between the petals has simple patterns. A simple design for all occasions and festivals.

Fourth image - This rangoli is also with a circle as a theme with petals inside radiating from the centre. I have added triangular patterns around the circle.

Though it is quite simple till this stage, filling up the colours inside needs a lot of patience.

You may observe that I have used two shades of pink for the petals inside

Double line rangoli kolam designs steps

Rangoli making / Rangoli drawing - double stroke kolam

The first image shows the first step of the rangoli.  I have used only parallel lines drawn simultaneously in this design. Draw four pairs of intersecting lines.

From the ends of each line connect the adjacent line to get the pattern seen above.

A very basic design that can by itself used as a simple rangoli for our homes.  The next design has evolved from the previous one.

Draw a parallel line border matching the contours of the first design.  Connect the border and the floral design with as many straight lines as possible

The third step of the rangoli is shown below.  Decorate the periphery of the rangoli with floral motifs that are formed using spiral and circular patterns.

Also fill the petals at the centre with simple oval designs.  This is a plain rangoli by itself and can be drawn at entrances.

The rangoli can be filled with colours.  Adding colours will make any rangoli very attractive.  Actually rangoli means rows of colours.

Hence colours and rangoli always go together. This rangoli in colours has been posted in a subsequent post

Rangoli above  has evolved from the second one  which has evolved from the first image above.  All three are unique by themselves

and  can  be drawn depending  upon the  occasion,  availability of time and space.

Thus from a single basic version, many  with intricate patterns  can evolve. I have constraints in space at present which will be reflected in  many designs.

The rangoli after addition of a few colours and the effect of colours on a plain white rangoli is clearly visible.

Add lines of different colours  between the double line border and the floral design and fill the patterns with colours

of your choice to get this simple design of rangoli

Shanku chakra namam rangoli kolam

An auspicious  Pooja room kolam and hence not drawn at the entrance.  As in the case of many posts I have shown

the white kolam only.  It is preferable to decorate with kavi ( ochre ) colour.  Kavi is usually used for
auspicious occasions.

This kolam can be drawn for our Wednesday kolangal or Saturday kolam as these two days are important for Lord Vishnu

We can also draw for Vaikunta Ekadasi festival , Purattasi month ( the whole month is considered important for Lord Venkateswara )

I have also added Goddess Lakshmi's Feet for this rangoli.  In traditional rangoli we represent Her through Feet patterns.

The main rangoli represents the Lord through shanka and chakra designs with the Namam pattern at the centre.🙏🙏

Small and beautiful rangoli designs

The first rangoli is a unique one created by me.   Observe how simple it is to create birds in rangoli kolam art.  The birds resemble ducks, don't they.

All intricate details that are required in drawing or painting or not required here.  A simple free hand design to represent a bird will suffice.

To further improve the rangoli the birds are shown carrying fruits.  Fill the rangoli with colours as shown in the image.

It will suffice if we draw colourful lines inside the rangoli design.  A floral design with birds is ready for use.

One of the easiest and best ways to make birds patterns ! It is not necessary to fill the entire rangoli with colours  in these types of rangoli.

That is the beauty of this traditional art form.  We can depict birds and flowers quite easily .  It is not necessary to draw them with

a piece of chalk and then drawn with rangoli powder.  We can represent Nature through simple images or patterns.

Rangoli sans dots as I named it was all about free hand rangoli particularly with double lines , initially.
The blog got a great welcome.

However several requests were received for simple rangoli designs so as to enable beginners to learn this beautiful art.

That is when I realised that it will not suffice if I share only the difficult 2 line version .  To encourage more people to practice

I began to share easy and small rangoli designs without chukki ( i.e without dots )/  Again there were requests for dot rangoli

So I started creating and sharing rangoli designs with dots too.

This collection of simple and beautiful rangoli designs shared through the images below are with colour.

For daily purpose rangoli we can draw them with white rangoli powder and for festivals like New Year and Pongal we can fill fill with colours..

These rangoli / kolam designs may be useful for those who want small and simple designs for Diwali, Margazhi or Navratri
