I have used the terms kolam rangoli quite freely in all the posts. Probably there would have been differences based on classical (!) explanations in the past but today kolams can also be colourful like rangolis both in the free hand and dots type. I find that even the terms "rangoli kolam" and "kolam rangoli" are used at present. The only area where I think kolams are different are in sikku kolams and arisi maavu kolams. Both are beautiful, challenging and can be intricate .
The rangoli in the video is another free hand design I regularly use at the entrance or puja room. It consists of two parallel lines, the difference between this rangoli and the ones I draw with parallel lines (double line) is that this rangoli is drawn with a single line first and then the second rangoli is added.
The rangoli below is one of those I regularly draw at the entrance or in the puja room. It consists of simple straight lines forming patterns like stars. A free hand rangoli.

The following are videos of easy free hand rangolis for beginners. The first one is based on swastik that is regularly used in rangoli designs. The second one involves drawing of some petals and the third one is a simple floral design. I hope it is of help to those who want to learn. The trick is only in controlling the flow of rangoli powder between the index finger and thumb in case of rangoli with single line design. Drawing with two parallel lines is little difficult as it involves controlling flow among the index, middle fingers and thumb.
