While we would like to maintain our tradition, save our heritage , nowadays time is an important factor .  Many of us are working and have to balance personal and official lift.  Consequently the need for quick and easy kolam.  We can try big and elaborate designs for festivals and functions and reserve small kolangal for our daily use.

Also nowadays most live in flats and the space available to draw kolam is restricted.  This is also a reason why small and simple kolams are in great demand.

The pictures give some ideas on how we can create beautiful designs with just three dots.  Sky is the limit when we let our imagination run riot .  It is possible to create beautiful kolams using the samllest dot grids.  Hope the above pictures prove it.

One important point to be noted is that small kolams that are drawn with dots can also be drawn without dots.  However many of us find using dot grid to draw kolam useful and we are comfortable with this technique of drawing with dot grids.

Such kolangal can be drawn for Margazhi kolams or Pongal too .  Kambi koams are popular during Pongal festival.  I have used a compact dot grid i.e the space between dots are less so that it is easy to present the images.  The problem is that more concentration than usual is needed to draw long lines between/among the dots  because it is very easy to get lost   Drawing long lines comes with practice,  it is difficult but overall gives a beautiful effect because joints at the junction of line segments can be reduced,  the longer the lines , lesser the joints.  If the junctions are visible we have to fill up with kola podi .  If we do this at many places the beauty may get reduced.

After extending sixteen lines ,  place five dots above each line as shown in the images.  Follow the pics to learn the step by step procedure to draw the kolam.  Some call it the Vishnu Hrudaya rangoli just like the Lakshmi Hrudaya rangoli we usually draw.  It is preferable to draw it in the Puja room and for festivals like Varalakshmi Pooje , Diwali .

As usual decorate with a  kaavi border.  We can make few decorations with kaavi inside the lotus too.

Since the steps are repeated , it is quite easy to draw only thing is we should not lose our focus or else we may miss the dots.

If some said beautiful rangoli can be drawn with big dot grids only , these two designs may prove them wrong.  Though I repeated many times ,  I would like to reiterate that in these days finding time for drawing rangoli at the entrance daily in the morning has become a premium .  Naturally we look for small and quick kolams for our daily kolangal.  Add the factor of space ,  flats offer very little space for drawing kolam.  Compare it with our house in a small town where we grew up , we had the entire courtyard at our disposal ,  so sometimes even our daily designs would be as big as Margazhi kolam.

Can we reuse flower garlands from God's photo

It is a good practice to remove the garland offered to Gods in the Puja the next day before starting the Puja. The dry flowers are removed and kept in a separate basket or bamboo plate near Pooja mandir or in the Pooja room. I offer the dried flowers to the Tulsi plant. In our family we do not put them in the dust bin. If Tulsi plant is not available we can offer to any other plants or trees in our garden, terrace garden. Also these garlands are not reused for any other photo or for any other purpose in the house. Traditionally flowers are tied with vazhai naaru ( banana bark fibre - dried ) . I removed the dried flowers and used the fibre again for tying flowers but only for Puja . Paneer rose petals , some fragrant leaves ( called maru , dhavanam ) were ground with shikkai few decades back. Nowadays everything available readymade !

To stand or sit while drawing kolam

Traditionally we have to stand and draw kolam at the entrance. Kolam is an art similar to rangoli that is drawn at the entrance of homes daily early in the morning. When we stand, bend and draw kolam obviously we perform a physical exercise too. Also it is a good practice to draw the kolam standing at one position without moving around the kolam. This will improve our visual skills because we try to visualise the patterns to be drawn in various directions standing in one place It is preferale to draw it early in the morning before sunrise. We need roses, long or medium size needle, thread and vaseline

Rose-petal-garland-material-png

Apply vaseline on the needle,  this ensures that petals do not tear when we make the garland

Rose-petals-garland-making-1a.png

Remove all the petals gently, simultaneously

Lines muggulu Sankranthi step by step

Muggulu with lines are quite popular during festivals and for Fridays.  This geethala muggu is shown in a few steps for easy understanding

Lines-muggulu-Sankranthi-image-1ad.png

Lines-muggulu-Sankranthi-image-1ag.png

Lines-muggulu-Sankranthi-image-1ai.png

These traditional kolam with lines are beautiful in their own way.  Though they appear simple , they can be challenging because we have to draw 4 parallel lines ( as humanly possible ) .  More the symmetry more the beauty.  It is a good practice to draw thin lines ,  for getting thin lines take minimum quantity of rangoli powder .  This is an important rangoli tip.

These lines are called ezhai .  Ezhai refers to a single strand of a thread.  We can imagine how thin the lines must be then.

Nine chukki rangoli are common , these medium sized rangoli designs can be used for our daily kolam and also for festivals if we are looking for simple and quick kolams.

Here it is through step by step pictures

More than 80 percent of the designs in this blog are created by me.  Of course we have common rangolis also including gantina rangolis which are common which may be around 20 percent.

Whenever I get time I try to create new designs listening to melodious songs that act as a catalyst.  Of the many designs I try only a few make to the blog or YouTube or Facebook.  Rest are not used immediately as I am not satisfied with them.  Sometimes I modify with different sets of patterns.

The pictures below show step by step how we can get a beautiful and thick garland using arali flowers.
This method gives a beautiful garland .  It gives me immense pleasure offering it to Goddess when I perform Puja.

arali-flower-garland-image-1a

The first two flowers are tied one above and another below - the usual method of tying .  The next two pictures show how the knot is made

arali-flower-garland-image-1ab.png

arali-flower-garland-image-1ac.png

arali-flower-garland-image-1ad.png

In this type of garland , the length of the thread we leave on the left determines the length of the garland
arali-flower-garland-image-1ag.png

After tying the first two flowers, turn.  Then place one flower so that the stalk is parallel and lies on the thread on the left side
arali-flower-garland-image-1ai.png

Thread goes around the stalk and comes to the right side of the flower placed
arali-flower-garland-image-1aj.png

Place the next flower to the right of the previous flower so that the stalk is on the thread

arali-flower-garland-image-1ap.png

Again the thread goes around the stalk and comes to the right side

arali-flower-garland-image-1al.png

Continue these steps
arali-flower-garland-image-1at.png

After completing the garland tie knots using the left and right ends of the threads to secure all the flowers.

For a change instead of step by step pics I have shared only the final completed kolams.  Decorate with kaavi and draw for the golu.  We can keep the designs as simple as possible or we can draw big and complicated designs if we are comfortable with such rangoli .  It is important that we  follow the tradition of celebrating Navarathri with kolu , kolam etc.  so the size of the kolam does not matter.
